Volume position is merely a convenient indicator, the root cause of the dynamic compression is the consumption of headroom due to the higher-than-normal input level. I'll try to explain this but my lousy English probably increased the "distortion" of the communication.
When he can't hear any volume increase beyond 12 o'clock volume, that means the amplifier has reached the maximum output, and the headroom was completely consumed when the volume turned to 12 o'clock already. When he lowered the input level (something possible with Chord DAC), he could still hear volume adjustment even when turning beyond 3 o'clock, the amplifier now having headroom to spare, and that is the underlying condition of stellar dynamic.
